Talbot Street Art Fair

Indianapolis, Indiana—The Marian University Art Gallery will display the artwork of James Tyler in an exhibit which will run January 9th-February 9th.  A reception and gallery talk will be held February 9th from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Tyler states about his work, “The brickhead sculptures were inspired by my enduring fascination with the great diversity of artistic constructs of humankind. The colossal stone heads of the Olmecs, the Temples of Angkor Wat, Michelangelo’s David, or the spires of Manhattan; what it is that drives us to create so many beautifully improbable objects…? I do not know the answer, but am content to follow behind and explore these well-traveled paths for myself.”

Originally from Indianapolis, Tyler moved to Haverstraw, New York along the Hudson where he began developing the clay bodies and new techniques necessary for his large Brickhead and monumental Colossus sculptures.  These larger outdoor sculptures can be seen in public parks and private sculpture gardens across the United States, including works in the Boston Subways, Miami Design District, Davlan Park Indianapolis, Linden House Sculpture Park, Santa Fe, Minneapolis, and soon the new Union Plaza in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska.

Tyler presently resides in Nyack, New York with his two children.  He is currently the Executive Director of the GAGA Arts Center, a not for profit visual and performing arts complex where he also maintains his studio.

The Talbot Street Art Fair, Inc. generously funded this exhibit.

The Marian University Art Gallery is located on the first floor of Fisher Hall.  Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome.  Please contact Gallery Director Jenny Pauckner at jpauckner@marian.edu with any inquiries.
